Jessica Monroy joined the Oxford Community last year as a Spanish teacher, and she immediately dove into all aspects of life here…you might see her each morning running our mindfulness club, participating in the cooking club, or decorating for events like the Chinese New Year and Cinco de Mayo celebrations. We are so glad to have her talents and kindness here, and today we are sharing a bit more as she answers our Spotlight questions!
Favorite spot on campus? The pergola outside of the dining hall. It's a nice place to share a meal with fellow coworkers and students.
What do you like most about Oxford? The one on one teaching method allows the teachers to customize each lesson and spend more quality time with each student.
Favorite project you’ve done with students? Decorating and celebrating holidays like Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Year and Dia de los Muertos. I thoroughly enjoy teaching about the history, current events and holidays related to the Hispanic culture. When we recreated an ofrenda (altar) for Dia de los Muertos, I was able to utilize this as a teaching tool and I believe it helped the students develop an understanding of the symbolism behind the elements featured on the ofrenda.
Something that not many people know about you?
My favorite tv show is the Golden Girls.
